National Garden Day: Why SPF Is the Most Important Thing You Can Wear Outdoors

Published by Epsom Skin Clinics | April 14, 2026

Happy National Garden Day! Whether you're pruning your roses, planting your summer borders, or simply enjoying a long-overdue cup of tea in the sunshine, today is a brilliant excuse to get outside and reconnect with nature.

But while you're pulling on your gardening gloves and reaching for your trowel, there's one crucial thing many of us still forget — and it's arguably the most important item in your skincare routine: SPF.

At Epsom Skin Clinics, sun protection sits at the heart of every treatment plan we create. It doesn't matter whether a patient comes to us for anti-ageing injectables, laser treatments, or a bespoke skin rejuvenation programme — without daily SPF, the results simply won't last. Here's everything you need to know about protecting your skin this National Garden Day and every sunny (and not-so-sunny) day beyond it.

Why UV Damage Is More Serious Than Most People Realise

The British weather might not feel threatening on a mild April afternoon, but UV radiation doesn't take days off. Even when it's cloudy, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through the cloud cover — reaching your skin just as effectively as on a clear summer's day.

There are two types of UV radiation to be aware of:

UVB rays are the ones responsible for sunburn. They're stronger in summer and are the primary cause of sunburn and a significant driver of skin cancer risk.

UVA rays are the silent ageing culprits. They penetrate much deeper into the skin — reaching the dermis — and are present at consistent levels throughout the entire year, even through windows. UVA rays break down collagen and elastin, accelerate pigmentation, and contribute directly to premature skin ageing.

In short: every hour you spend in the garden without SPF is an hour your skin is ageing faster than it needs to.

The Real Cost of Unprotected Sun Exposure

The effects of cumulative sun damage don't appear overnight — which is why many people underestimate the harm being done. Over time, unprotected UV exposure leads to:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles forming earlier and more deeply
  • Pigmentation and sunspots that are notoriously difficult to treat
  • A loss of skin firmness and elasticity as collagen breaks down
  • Uneven skin tone and a dull, tired complexion
  • An increased risk of skin cancer, including the potentially life-threatening Malignant Melanoma

The good news? The majority of UV-related skin damage is entirely preventable. The single most effective step you can take — regardless of your age, skin type, or budget — is applying a broad-spectrum SPF every single morning.

How to Choose the Right SPF

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Here's what to look for:

Broad-Spectrum Protection

Always choose a sunscreen labelled broad-spectrum, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. A product that only protects against UVB will prevent sunburn, but it won't stop the deeper, longer-term UVA damage.

SPF 30 as a Minimum — SPF 50 Is Better

For daily use, we recommend a minimum of SPF 30. For extended time outdoors — such as gardening on a sunny afternoon — SPF 50 is the gold standard. The difference between SPF 30 and 50 may seem small in numbers, but SPF 50 blocks approximately 98% of UVB rays compared to SPF 30's 96.7%.

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen

  • Physical (mineral) sunscreens contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. These are ideal for sensitive or reactive skin types, including those with rosacea.
  • Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. They tend to be lighter in texture and easier to wear under makeup.

Our clinical team can advise on which formulation suits your individual skin type during a consultation.

SPF Application: Where Most People Go Wrong

Even when people do remember to apply SPF, the most common mistakes significantly reduce its effectiveness:

1. Not applying enough. The recommended amount for the face and neck alone is approximately half a teaspoon (2.5ml). Most people apply far less than this.

2. Forgetting the neck, décolletage, and hands. These areas are constantly exposed and are often where signs of ageing appear first — yet they're among the most commonly missed.

3. Applying once and forgetting to reapply. SPF degrades with sun exposure, heat, and perspiration. If you're spending more than two hours outdoors, you need to reapply every two hours — or more frequently if you're sweating.

4. Skipping SPF on cloudy days. As we've outlined above, UV radiation doesn't disappear when the clouds roll in. Make SPF a daily habit, not a seasonal one.

5. Applying SPF on top of makeup. Your morning SPF should be applied after moisturiser and before makeup — not on top of foundation. If you're reapplying throughout the day, look for an SPF powder or mist that can be layered over makeup.

SPF and Your Skin Treatments: Why It Matters Even More

If you've invested in professional skin treatments — whether that's anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, or LED phototherapy — SPF isn't optional. It's essential.

Many treatments work by stimulating cell renewal, reducing pigmentation, or restoring a youthful glow. Without adequate sun protection, UV exposure can:

  • Trigger post-inflammatory pigmentation following any resurfacing treatment
  • Accelerate the breakdown of dermal filler
  • Undo the results of your skin treatments within weeks
  • Increase the risk of adverse reactions on treated or sensitised skin

We tell every patient the same thing: your SPF is the return on your investment. Skip it, and the results simply won't last.

Our Clinical Recommendations for Gardeners

If you're planning to spend time outdoors this National Garden Day and beyond, here's our practical SPF guide from the clinical team at Epsom Skin Clinics:

Apply SPF 50 broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face, neck, décolletage, hands, and any other exposed areas at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat to reduce direct UV exposure to the face and scalp.

Reapply every two hours — set a reminder on your phone if it helps.

Seek shade during peak UV hours, typically between 11am and 3pm, even on a British spring day.

Wear UV-protective clothing where possible, particularly on your arms and shoulders.

Check the UV index on your weather app before going out. On days with a UV index of 3 or above, SPF is non-negotiable.

Not Sure Which SPF Is Right for Your Skin?

With so many products on the market, choosing the right SPF can feel overwhelming — especially if you have specific concerns such as oily skin, sensitivity, rosacea, or post-treatment skin.

Our medical team at Epsom Skin Clinics offers free, no-obligation skin consultations that include a full skin analysis using the OBSERV 520 imaging system. This allows us to assess existing UV damage, identify pigmentation concerns, and recommend the most appropriate clinical-grade SPF for your skin type.
